Vista Imaging Introduces ViCAM III Digital Imaging Engine
Targets Next Generation Intelligent Cameras

SAN CARLOS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 2002 - Vista Imaging today announced two new digital image processing chips based on its award-winning ViCAM® technology. Eliminating the need for multiple chip solutions, the ViCAM®III ASICs serve as an advanced digital imaging engine for any product that grabs still images, video, and audio, while providing the ability to incorporate security, biometrics, and other intelligent processes directly into the camera.

The ViCAM®III incorporates Vista Imaging’s advanced imaging algorithms, resulting in superior image quality and extreme low light capabilities, a multi-endpoint USB controller, industry standard JPEG Codec engine, powerful RISC processor, frame memory controller, audio codec interface, and processor expansion port. Input can be from CCD or CMOS sensors, or standard composite video decoders for accepting video from camcorders, TV’s and VCR’s.

ViCAM®III on-chip RISC processor provides up to 80mips of processing power with typically 10mips required for a Video and Audio USB WebCam.

The ViCAM®III is available in 144 pin (VC3-B144-A) and 256 pin (VC3-B256-A) BGA packages. Both offer advanced, powerful, and very flexible programming for easy incorporation of a customer’s unique product features like security, biometric, and motion detection as examples. The VC3-B144-A with its small 12mm square footprint is compatible with sensors up to 1.3 million pixels, capable of 30 fps at VGA resolution over a USB 1.1 interface, and is targeted at low cost, high performance tethered camera products. The VC3-B256-A with its 23mm square footprint is compatible with sensors up to 16 million pixels and with its increased I/O count, allows for expandability and direct interfacing to additional hardware options such as LCD’s, flash memory, communication processors and sub-systems (like Ethernet, BlueTooth, 802.11, etc…), and much more.

With complete ViCAM®III reference designs in place for products such as Set-Top-box WebCams, stand alone Ethernet NetCams, PC (Windows & Linux) tethered WebCams, dual mode cameras, and more, customers can immediately transition into product customization and manufacturing.

Development kits with hardware, advanced software development and debugging tools, including an assembler, C compiler, and debugger running on a Windows or Linux platform, OS drivers for Windows and Linux, documentation, reference designs, training and support are available now to selected customers. Volume shipments for both packages will begin in Q-2, 2002.
